Getting
Started
SHAPE developed a plan to encourage safe and active
modes of transportation, address traffic issues and pedestrian safety,
and share information with schools about existing programs and resources
geared to student safety and active living.
This issues are very important and SHAPE teamed up with many groups
and agencies that already work in these areas and have linked resources
and groups to schools involved with SHAPE. SHAPE also involves the
students, parents, staff and communities to make schools safer and
healthier for everyone!
Getting in SHAPE is
as easy as 1, 2, and 3!
- Talk to your school community about your traffic, safety and health issues and identify your concerns.
- Determine your course of action, resources and team.
- Begin by implementing an activity or event to get your school community in SHAPE! Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Encourage your school to participate in Internation Walk To School Day.
- Implement a Walking School Bus Program at you school.
- Host and Event day, such as Walking/Wheeling Day once a week/month
at your school to promote awarenes and encourage activity.
- . Train students to ride and maintain their bikes by having bike clubs,
rodeos and school-wide events.
- Encourage the use of public or school transit by hosting events that
teach families and children about riding the bus.
